Grading Skins-Large, Medium and Small | |
|
Large, Medium and Small-Can you give the lengths and widths of large, medium and small skins if mink, coon, skunk and opossums? I do not want to sell large skins and have them graded too far down, as I believe some fellows do. I shipped some skunks this season and they were all graded small, so I measured some of the boards and some of them were 2 ˝ feet long and 8 inches wide, 10 inches from the top. In what grade did they belong?
It would be difficult, if not impossible, to give accurately the measurements of the skins that should grade large, medium and small unless we had a large number of skins to measure. The fur buyers do not all grade furs in the same way, and I am inclined to think that some of them, who quote very high prices, make the grade suit the price. Quotations are of no value unless you know how that buyer grades furs. It is the full returns for your shipment, and not for certain skins, that should determine whether you have had a square deal. In regard to the sizes of your stretching boards, if you mean just what you have written, this will tell nothing. But it may be that you could tell the size of the skins that had been stretch on them by the marks of the nails or tacks, and mean the measurements mentioned for skins and not boards. Without knowing just what you meant I could not answer this question.
