The grebe is a bird of the diver family. There are several varieties, but most common is the pied billed grebe, or “hell-diver” as it is commonly called. It is a dull colored bird, resembling a small duck, when on the water. It is very active and a great diver, being able to swim quite a distance under water. It can dive so quickly that it can easily dodge a bullet or a charge of shot.
