Great Bear Lake – Kindly tell me what game is found around Great Bear Lake, Alaska and are there any woods there? Would one need to use sled dogs?
Great bear lake is in Canada, not Alaska. All I know about that country is what I have read. I understand that it is a very barren, desolate land, and thin fringes of stunted trees are found but rarely. The surface of the country consists of low, flat rock ledges and flat “muskeges,” wet, mossy marshes.
The winters are long and extremely cold. It is a part of the winter range of the barren ground caribou, and thousands of these animals are found. There are also wolves, Arctic foxes and I believe, the red and silver foxes are found also. Otters and mink are found on the streams. There are rock ptarmigan and perhaps rabbits, although I am not sure. I think that the barren ground grizzly bear is also found there. My advice is, think of places nearer home.
