Glands, Preparation-How do you prepare the scent of glands of mink, muskrat and skunk for use as decoys? How long will it keep?
The scent glands of the mink are usually made use of as soon as secured and need no preparation. I simply squeeze out the contents onto a small piece of rotten wood and use that for one set, and the glands themselves for another. If I want to keep some for the next season, I split them open, put then in a bottle and place a small quantity of alcohol over them. To use this scent I take a small twig and shatter the end by pounding it behind the trap. Skunk scent needs no preparation. I squeeze the contents into a bottle, cork it tightly, and then wash the bottle in benzene to remove the scent from the outside. Muskrat musk may be squeezed from the glands into a small bottle. Add a few drops of alcohol. These scents will keep indefinitely.
