Gas cutting is the end effect of the repeated exposure of the barrel steel to the hot gasses created by the burning gunpowder. Once quite common, throat erosion has been greatly reduced as barrel steels have increased in quality. Gas cutting / throat erosion is one of the main reasons that barrels become “shot out”.
