Furs-How Sold-Do the fur houses we fellows ship our furs to, re-stretch them to proper size and dry them if necessary? If they do this, can you explain how? Do the dealers who sell on the London market place their furs with the four or five exporters to these sales or sell direct? Which is the largest American market, New York or St. Louis?
If green, they are re-stretched, fleshed and dried. If dried when received they are scraped, then re-stretched and placed in a drying room-heated by hot air. Some dealers sell to exporters, others sell direct. Many selling direct deal with the American representatives of the London firms. Some firms allow 60 percent, of the value when goods are consigned. It costs from 7 to 10 percent, top export. Dealers who sold at home came out better as a rule the past season than those who exported. New York, although St. Louis receives more direct shipments from trappers and small dealers. New York manufactures more furs than all the rest of America combined. St. Louis claims and does buy more raw furs direct from first hands than other markets.
