Fur and Game in Kickitat Co., Washington | |

Fur and Game in Kickitat Co., Washington-Trapping in Klickitat County must be good. Because one local newspaper said that there were 22 trappers busy in the county. Along the Columbia River, between Bingen and Lyle, where I have a homestead , there was, besides a few amateurs, one professional trapper who did a fairly clean job.
The furbearers are otter, fisher, beaver, muskrat-all scarce; beaver is protected. Coyotes and skunks are more plentiful and once in a while a wild cat is caught. Around Mt. Adams there are some marten, bear and mountain lion.
For game we have quail, grouse, pheasant, ducks, deer-all scarce. In the White Salmon and Klickitat Rivers there are some trout caught. Last winter one hunter killed three mountain lions, which were having a feast on venison, in as short a time as he could aim and pull the trigger This happened near the Wind River, about 15 miles north from the Columbia River in Skamania County.
A short time ago a lady from White Salmon shot a bear in the outskirts of the town. At Trout Lake two boys had caught a deer in the deep snow which they were trying to ride home but the deer went back into the timber before they got to their destination.
As to climate, we do not have any extremes. The winters are mild. In the two winters I have been here the thermometer never went below zero. The summers are rather dry but the thermometer seldom goes above the 100 degree mark. In the fall and spring we get a good deal of rain. The past winter we had two feet of snow while the winter before we had 3 ½ feet of it. The rainfall at White Salmon and the western part of the county averages 30 inches, at Lyle, 24 inches, and at Goldendale, 16 inches.
