For game we have prairie chickens, ducks and partridge. Moose and deer are pretty scarce.
For fur-bearing animals we have mink, muskrats, weasels and skunks. Mink are pretty scarce, but muskrats are very plentiful. Weasels and skunks are not very plentiful.
This season we have caught so far 120 muskrats, two mink, one weasel and one skunk.
My way of catching weasel is by taking a carcass of a muskrat and laying it at place where the weasel visits and put two traps around it. Then take canes or thin sticks and stake them all around and leave two openings to put the traps in. To get to the bait it must go through the openings and get into the traps. I also use a piece of liver and hang it over the trap and sprinkle some blood around it. The traps used for weasel should be No. 0.
Our hunting and trapping outfit consists of one Ithaca shotgun, 30-inch barrel; one Tobin shotgun, 32-inch barrel; one Winchester .38-56 nine shot repeater; one tent, 7x9, 10-ounce duck; one camping stove; one carbide camper's lamp, self lighter; three dozen double jaw traps; half dozen No. 1 traps; one camera, size 2^x4^4. We are going to add some more to our outfit next year.
I trap along the Red Lake River. The Hudson's Bay Company have had a post on our farm, close to the river.
