Foxy Questions-What is the best bait for fox? I would like to have this question answered by all the old fox trappers. I would also like to know why a fox lifts its right foot when listening, and never its left, also why most of them are caught by the right foot? Why is the pelt of an old fox thicker than that of a young one, caught at the same time?
Judging from my experience, there is no better bait for foxes than the flesh of a skunk, a small piece, highly tainted, used in connection with Schofield scent. However, it would depend on the method of setting what kind of bait to use. Muskrat and opossum flesh make excellent bait.
As to why the fox lifts its right foot when listening, I am unable to say, unless it is caused by the animal being “right handed” as is man. Many species of animals use one foot more than the other but the rule is, the left foot. Why more are caught by the right foot I do not know, as I have never noticed that. Neither can I say why the old fox has heavier fur, which is, I presume what you mean. The skin of the older animal would naturally be heavier than that of the young.
