FOX SET IN SETTLED COUNTRY—Can you tell me a good set for foxes for use in a settled country where traps are bothered by dogs?
Yes, I can tell you of such acts, but any set will catch a dog occasionally. A very good way is to set your trap on top of a little mound (natural), ant nest, rotten stump, or log with one end elevated, no other high object being near, and place the bait about 8 or 10 feet away. The fox will in variably make use of such a rise to investigate before going closer, and a dog would seldom step up on it. Or you can use a water set and bait with a small bird, but most trappers, myself included, prefer to use scent with the water set, and almost any scent that will attract a fox will also attract a dog.
