FORESTRY—What are the duties of a forester and how can one obtain a position?

Forest officers are paid from $900 to $5000 per year. The positions open to eligible persons are those of forest supervisor, deputy forest supervisor, forest assistants, lumbermen, scalers, forest rangers, forest guard and planting assistant. The fourth, fifth and eighth of these titles explain themselves. A forest guard is employed only temporarily, in case of danger from fire, etc. These four then will probably not interest Mr. Hill. The highest position, that of supervisor, is to be obtained only by promotion from that of ranger or assistant, and to get it one must have business and executive ability. Mr. Hill, in all probability would prefer to become either a forest ranger or a forest assistant. The former must have had wide experience in Western life, and must understand something of surveying, estimating and scaling timber, lumbering and the live-stock business. He must also be able- bodied and able to take care of himself and horses in sections far from any base of supplies, and it would certainly take years to acquire all this. But the position of forest assistant is equally good, and a course at any good school of forestry will fit one for this. There are courses given in the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota, Michigan Agricultural College, and in many other schools and colleges. Mr. Hill can obtain full information on this subject by addressing The Forester, U. S. Dept. of Agriculture, Forest Service, Washington, D. C. The service is full of opportunity for the right men sod the force is yet entirely too small. I might add that every hunter and trapper should be interested in the Forest Service, for without it, it would only be a question of years, and not a very great many, before our hunting grounds were pretty well depleted.
