FLY-FISHING FOR BROWN AND RAINBOW TROUT
When the Eastern angler speaks of fly-fishing for trout the speckled brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, is always implied; but while it is true that, fortunately, the red-spotted trout is still the most common resident of our streams, yet in many streams fontinalis now shares the water with one or both of two other good game fishes, the brown trout and the rainbow trout, Salmo fario and Salmo irideus respectively. Of the two the brown trout is the more common and it is well for the fly-caster to know something about its nature and habits and the most suitable tackle and methods for fly-fishing for brown trout; also he should know the facts of a similar nature regarding the rainbow.
