Fishing Rods-To Fasten Silk Wrapping-Can you inform me of a cement or glue with which I can fasten the wrapping on my split bamboo fishing pole? I have tried a number of kinds but could not make it stick any length of time.
No glue or cement should be used; the ends of the silk are drawn under the winding and this holds it securely. Our book, “Science of Fishing,” explains this fully. Some people use wax on the silk to keep it from slipping while wrapping the rod. The best wax I know for this purpose is the white wax used for fly tying. I prefer to use the silk unwaxed, as it keeps its color nicer, but it is hard to get it started, especially in the tip joint. After winding give it a coat of white shellac, and after this has dried varnish it with rod varnish. It will take two or three days, in summer, for this varnish to dry, and you should apply two or three coats of it. If you have removed all of the windings it is best to also remove the original varnish is well set and dry but not yet perfectly hard is the best time to do the wrapping, as the silk does not slip them.
