WHERE FOUND—What kind of clams or mussels are pearls found in—the round or oval ones, or the oblong, dark colored ones that are found in the mud? Is there anything besides pearls found in clams?
I think that pearls are found in all fresh water mollusks, but as a rule it is only the large, rough shells that contain pearls. A smooth, perfect shell seldom holds a pearl. Besides pearls, baroques and slugs, which are imperfect pearls, are also found in the mussels.
