FIREARMS FOR MOOSE, BEAR AND CARIBOU | |

FIREARMS FOR MOOSE, BEAR AND CARIBOU—I would like to know whether the 30-30 Winchester rifle, model 1894, is powerful enough for moose, bear and caribou, and how far it will kill under favorable conditions? What is the striking power of the 30-30 soft nose bullet?
Under favorable eond3tions the 30-30 will kill moose, caribou and black bears at distances up to 300 yards. I have myself killed a moose with a 30-30 carbine, but do not consider the 30-30 heavy enough for regular use on moose and caribou. I would prefer the 30-40, 33, 32 Special or 35 Winchester. Some moose and caribou are very tenacious of life, and a rifle of great shocking power is advised. The striking power of the 30-30 at 50 feet is 1449 foot pounds; penetration of soft point bullet, eleven % inch pine boards at 15 feet.
