FOR COYOTES AND BADGER—What is your opinion of the model 27 Marlin rifle, .32-20 caliber, as an all-around rifle for use on a ranch, for game such as coyotes and badgers? Is a .32-20 better than a .32-40 and what cartridges will each handle?
As an all-round rifle, for game such as mentioned, on a ranch, I would ask for nothing better than the .32-20 Marlin, model 27, hut if I were hunting such game as a business I would want a more powerful arm. There is no finer rifle made in this size. It will handle all .32-20 cartridges, including the High Power, smokeless. This cartridge bas an accurate range of from 300 to 500 yards. It gives a muzzle velocity of 1,575 feet per second a muzzle energy of 551 foot pounds, and a penetration, with soft point bullet, of ten seven-eighths inch pine boards. This .32-40 is far more powerful but can only be had in the lever action. It will handle oil cartridges of this caliber, black, low pressure smokeless, the Winchester High Velocity, and the .32- 40 Marlin High Power smokeless. This latter cartridge gives a muzzle velocity of 2005 feet per second, a muzzle energy of 1558 foot pounds and a penetration in seven-eighths inch pine boards, of ten boards. The accurate range is 300 to 500 yards.
