Ferrets-Foot Rot-Can you tell me what is wrong with my ferret, and what to do for it? Its feet are very sore and blistered and it does not run about much.
I think it is what is known as foot-rot, and is probably caused by a wet and dirty pen. There are various remedies. Wash the feet thoroughly with warm water and castile soap, then apply sulphur and Vaseline. Repeat this each day. If the disease is far advanced use equal parts of sulphur, red-precipitate and Venice turpentine, as an ointment. Some ferret raisers put turpentine on the feet after washing and pull all the scabs off. This is a severe remedy, but is said to kill the germs. Foot-rot is contagious and the healthy animals should not be allowed to run with the one so affected. The pen should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
