Feet-Toughening-Can you tell me of a remedy which will toughen a hound’s feet? This is a very rough, rocky country and hard on dogs.
The dog should be allowed to run freely before the hunting season opens and the feet will get toughened somewhat. The following treatment is said to be very good: Take half a pint of oil of tar; pour a small quantity on a plank; put the dog’s feet squarely into this, then remove and place the foot in a pan of Fuller’s Earth. Do this every other day for a week before the hunting season and once a week while hunting. When you come in from the hunt, bathe the dog’s feet in cold water and remove all dirt from between the toes, then hold his feet for ten minutes in a solution of boric acid.
