Farm Dog-What kind of dog is best for a “farm dog” to hunt such game as skunks, mink, coon and the like? Would the Airedale be a good one? How about the beagle? Will the beagle hunt skunk and coons and will either of these dogs dig for woodchucks? Will they follow a trail well by scent?
I think you could do no better that to get a full blooded Airedale pup and train him yourself? They make excellent all-around night hunters, and good dogs to have on the farm. They are good trailers, though perhaps not as good as the foxhound, and will kill woodchucks if they get “half a chance,” though it would take some digging to get a ‘chuck from his den and it would be too much to expect of any dog. The beagle makes a good dog with proper training but it is at rabbit hunting that the beagle shines, and the Airedale will be far the best for your purpose.
