Ermine-Will some person please tell me what an ermine is? If the common white weasel is not an ermine why is it sometimes given that name? Why are these animals white in winter and brown in summer? What size of traps is best for them?
While it is not known for a certainty, to me at least, I believe that the ermine of the far north is merely a variety of Richardson’s weasel (the common white weasel), as there is no marked difference between the two animals. The ermine being found farther north is more valuable, it being somewhat larger than the common weasel and has longer and thicker fur. The weasel is called ermine because of its resemblance to that animal, because of its resemblance to that animal, because many believe then to be the same, and because the fur is used in imitation of ermine. While I have a theory as to what caused the changes of color, I cannot say for certain. I have found the number 1 ˝ trap best for trapping weasel and one of the long spring style is to be preferred. Any trap will catch and held them, but when they freeze around the jaws of a small, short spring trap it is almost impossible to remove them without damaging the fur.
