Eprouvette — The eprouvette, or powder tester, was a necessity due to the unequal strength of different brands of powder and to the inequality of different outputs of the same brand. A small charge of one issue might be equal to a large charge furnished later and a large charge of strong powder might cause serious consequences. A sample tested in the eprouvette gave the clew as to what amount to use to get equal shooting. Eprouvettes were of many different designs, but all depended upon the same principle. A measured amount of powder, exploded in the Eprouvette, did work against the tension of a spring, or against friction; the work done was indicated or measured on a dial or numbered scale, showing the strength of the powder.
