Elk Comparison – Is there such an animal as the elk in this country or is it a name given by hunters to the wapiti? As I understand it the old world elk and our moose are the same; the European reindeer and our caribou are also the same as our waptiti. Please compare the other species of deer of each continent.
Your comparisons are correct, for the elk of Europe, the real elk, is practically the same as our moose, if not identical. In this country the Indian name “moose” is used instead of elk, and the wapiti of the west is erroneously called “elk”. By “stag” I know you mean the common deer of Europe, but as stag has different meanings the best name for this animal, and the one generally the same as the wapiti, but smaller. The caribou and the reindeer are also the same animal, but in Europe it has been domesticated, and I am not sure that it is ever found wild there, while our caribou has never been domesticated. The smaller species of deer are not represented in Europe, to my knowledge, but in Asia there are both small deer and larger ones resembling the wapiti. The small species do not resemble ours.
