DRIVING MINK FROM HOLE—An old trapper living near here claims he can tell whether a mink is in a hole or not. How can he do it? I have always understood that the mink is a wandering animal which puts up for the day in any hole it can find. Does the female mink have a regular abode? Is there any successful method of smoking a mink from its burrow and is a ferret any good for mink?
In all probability the old trapper only wanted to impress you with his superior knowledge, but it is possible that he has a method which is good in some cases. The mink is, as you say, a wandering animal, but it also has a regular den which it visits occasionally. The female is less of a wanderer than the male. It is possible that a mink might be driven from a den by blowing smoke into it with a bellows but this is only an idea of mine and I do not know just how it would work out. An occasional ferret will drive mink from burrow, but I do not believe there are many that would do it or that any could be depended upon.
