Dram equivalent although no longer necessary is still used when describing the amount of powder in shotshells. Originally dram equivalent was used to show that a certain amount of smokeless powder was the equivalent loading to a certain amount of black powder. The term originated during the transition from black to smokeless powder.
There is no safe way a reloader can calculate the dram equivalent of black to smokeless powder and smokeless is measured by volume and smokeless by weight.
