I have a good hound but he has tender feet and if he hunts all day his feet get so sore that he can hardly walk. Can you tell me how I can harden them?
Bathe the dog’s feet in cold water, then hold them about ten or fifteen minutes in a solution of boracic acid. Do this night and morning. You probably keep the dog tied up when not hunting and it allows the feet to get tender. At the beginning of the hunting season, or before, you should let him run to harden his feet, and don’t hunt too long or too often at first.
An old half-breed Indian told me of a remedy which I used and in one month my dog was out on the trail again. It is as follows: Bathe the dog’s feet each day in a solution of fifteen drops carbolic acid to one quart warm water; let dry and then rub Vaseline well into the feet. Mix the acid solution fresh each day.
