Gun Shyness-How can I break my young beagle of being gun shy? He is a good hunter, but when I shoot he runs home.
Try tying him up and shooting light charges at some distance from him. When he gets used to it go closer and shoot and I believe you can break him all right. I would not whip him.
If your dog looks like an intelligent animal and is quick to learn, try to break him of the habit. But if he does not learn readily it is best to dispose of him or kill him. First teach your dog to lead and take him out as often as you can. Take a small or lightly loaded gun to begin with and shoot chipmunks, woodchucks, etc.-any game you find-and let your dog smell at everything you shoot; let him chew or shake it if he will; pet him and let him think he has done something. As soon as he gets used to a light charge and is not afraid increase the load a little, and in this way gradually bring it up to the full charge. Don’t shoot close to him if he happens to be in front of you and don’t kick him or beat him with a club. If you want to correct him use a light switch. Be kind to him and see how quickly he gets over being gun shy.
