Coon and Rabbit-How long must a dog be allowed to hunt coons before he can be trained to hunt rabbits in daytime?
I would not allow the dog to hunt rabbits at all. I am told that some dogs will hunt rabbits by day and pay no attention to them at night, but it is difficult to get a dog to understand this. In my opinion the best dog is the one that is trained for one kind of game hunting.
I wish to buy a young dog which I can train to hunt rabbits by day and coons and skunks at night. Would a beagle be good, and if not, what kind of dog is best?
Almost any dog having hound blood is good for rabbits, and there are many other dogs which are good, therefore, what you want to look for is a dog which will be good for coon and skunks. Personally I would not want a night hunting dog to chase rabbits, but if I did want such a one I would take the ordinary foxhound. It is all in the training but I think you would have trouble in training a dog for this kind of hunting.
