Distemper (May Be)-My foxhound was sick and the three doctors who treated him said he had distemper, but they didn’t seem to help him much. His eyes look good and his nose doesn’t run but he has a cough. I could not use him for hunting rabbits last fall as he got tired and couldn’t run long. He also seemed to have trouble with his back, for a while. Some time ago I noticed him throwing up worms and thought that probably was the cause of his cough. Can you tell me what to do for him?
Without seeing the dog and knowing more about his trouble, I couldn’t give much advice. But if three veterinary surgeons or doctors thought the disease was distemper, it probably was or is that malady. If it is distemper the dog should show the symptoms you mention, cough, watery and inflamed eyes or even mattery, running nose, weaknesses, loss of ambition, dry hot nose, chills and heats alternately, poor appetite, thirst and irregular bowels. But the most certain sight is the rapid loss of flesh.
It is possible that the cough maybe caused by worms, anyway you must get rid of the parasites. It is possible for them to cause all of the troubles that you have mentioned, and you can hardly expect your dog to show very good health until he is rid of them.
