DENS—TO TELL WHAT IS IN—How can I tell what is In small dens about six or seven inches in diameter when I find them in the woods?
By the smell, hair and tracks. I have cleaned away the entrances to burrows, and spread down damp clay, making a mat, which caught the foot prints, and so I identified the animals. I think your dens may be woodchucks, or, if near the water, mink; possibly fox; and possibly bunny rabbits.
