DEER—SHEDDING HORNS—Do deer shed their horns every spring? I find the horns scattered all over the mountains. If they do, do the old horns drop off before the new ones come out? Do elk shed their horns also?
Yes, deer lose their horns each year, in late winter or early spring, and grow a new set in spring and summer. The old horns are shed some time before the new ones appear. Elk and all animals of the deer family shed their horns annually and in the American Natural History you can see photographs showing the successive stages of the shedding and growing of new antlers of a captive elk.
