DEER LICK—Can you tell me how to make a deer lick?
The lick should be made in early spring or late in the fall. Select a bushy tree to watch from and make a comfortable seat in it, also make a ladder of some sort so that it may be climbed easily. Make the lick about fifty yards from the tree, keeping in mind the direction in which the prevailing winds blow and make the lick on the windward side of the watch tree. Place the salt on an old rotten stump, if possible, using plenty of it. See that you have an unobstructed view of the lick from the seat in the tree. It is a good idea to freshen up the lick by placing more salt there sometime in the summer. These licks are good only in summer and early fall, and their use is illegal in the United States.
