DANDELION AND STAR-ROOT—How are dandelion roots cured? When is the best time to dig them?
Dandelion roots should be dug in July and August. The roots must be washed clean and the stems of the plants cut off. After washing they must be spread out to dry. I dry them on a clean table or on boards similarly arranged. They must not be allowed to get wet after they are partly dry. They should he dried until they become brittle and break easily which will be in about three days then they should be broken into small pieces and placed in a sack until ready for sale. They should be kept as clean as possible and out of the reach of rats and mice. If I am not mistaken, I saw, some time ago, a question regarding star-root. The roots of this plant should be dug in August and dried in about the same way as the dandelion.
