Crimp refers to the turning in of a brass case or a shotshell hull mouth, therefore preventing the movement of a bullet or the spilling of shot. Not all rounds are or need be crimped, the end use of the round, the recoil of the round/firearm combination and the expected rough handling in the field or military all influence the need and degree of crimp.
Rounds that are to be used in firearms that headspace on the case mouth, must have a minimal crimp applied if headspace is to be maintained.
