Cross Breeds for Partridge and Rabbit
Cross Breeds for Partridge and Rabbit-Will you kindly tell me of a cross between a thoroughbred spaniel bitch and an English Beagle or foxhound? Would either be good dogs for hunting rabbits and partridges, or would they be good for water? Which cross would you advise?
Presumably you mean a Cocker spaniel, which by nature is a good hunter on land, chasing rabbits as well as putting up birds. The cocker spaniel, however, lacks pointing instinct, hence will not stand or point game birds. The beagle, and also the foxhound hunt and give tongue and , therefore, a cross of either will produce hunters-for chase. Should you mean an Irish water spaniel and want to cross therewith, then you will instill retrieving from water, but the “chase” is but half inbred and a less useful dog on rabbits it to be expected. There being no pointing instinct in either breed, no attention will be paid to birds in the latter cross. However, crosses should be avoided and straight-bred dog chosen only for any sort of game intended to be hunted. Moreover, a thoroughbred dog of any breed can be used for propagating and the offspring will command a price, whereas crosses (mongrels) are never considered of much value.
