Coyotes-In Packs-Do Coyote go in packs? The answer was that sometimes four or five are seen in a pack but as a general rule, no. This is correct. As a general rule more than three coyotes are not seen together and these often eighty to a hundred yards apart, than closer. However, coyotes do congregate in large packs. My father was hunting in a piece of bluffy, bushy country some time ago and scared up a coyote somewhere in the bluffs. At any rate he saw him running and proceeding to the top of the knoll, he saw eighteen hitting the high places, evidently following the example of the first one scared up, who probably was their sentry.
A fellow for whom I was working, was out collecting during the winter of 1907, which was a severe winter here, and he said one evening about dusk there were several coyotes circling around his sleigh. He had a gun but was too cold to use it. I am told by early settlers that large numbers of coyotes would gather around any dead beast on the prairie and come quite close to buildings. Coyotes are scarce and shy around here now. A fellow told me a few days ago that he saw ten coyotes in a bunch around the lake, which is only a few miles from here.
