Cooking Without Cooking Utensils-Please tell me how to prepare and cook satisfactory in the open without regular kitchen utensils, two of the following articles, eggs, bacon, hunter’s stew, fish, fowl, game, pancakes, hoecakes, biscuit, hardtack or twist baked on a stick?
You can fry eggs on greased hot stones that are smooth topped. Bacon can be broiled on the end of a stick. If you have a pot hole in a stone, or a wooden pail or hollow will soon cook it-as the Indians used to cook their stews. Fish may be broiled or planked-nailed to a board stood up before a fire. Broil the birds or game. You can wrap the birds or game in mud-feathers and all, and skin and all. Stuff with onions, crackers, bread crumbs, seasoned with salt, and bury in hot coals under dirt. Make your pancake dough very thick, wrap it around a stick-an arrow shaft, say, and spin over the fire till cooked through-this is for biscuits, too. Plaster the biscuit or how cake on a piece of plank or split log and stand up before the fire. How cake is simple pancakes (cornmeal or flour) roasted on a plank and turned over from time to time-and hardstick and twist are as described for pancake batter. You can swing dough in balls on pieces of iron wire and make biscuits that way. Build a fire on a flat rock, get it hot, and then bake your pancakes on the rock, after sweeping away the ashes and coals. Wrapping fish up in thick layers of leaves, as corn leaves, wiring them around, and putting in the coals for from twenty minutes to half an hour will cook them. Bury the eggs in the dirt two or three inches deep, and then build a little fire over them-not too hot. Of course, the eggs should be wrapped in leaves in case they should “explode.”
