Cough-What is the matter with a dog which has a dry, hacking cough? The dog is about three years old and coughs continually. What is a good remedy for diarrhea?
The cough is only a symptom of some other disorder, in the case of your dog, probably bronchitis. This disease cannot be cured but the cough may be relieved by the following: Chorate of potash, 3 drams, wine of ipecac, 3 drams, tincture of opium, 2 drams; powdered licorice root, ½ ounce, powdered gun acacia, ¾ ounce; honey, 1 ounce. Mix and give medium-sized dogs a teaspoonful every three hours. Always shake the bottle well before using. For diarrhea, give a dose of castor oil to cleanse the bowels. If the dog shows symptoms of much pain add ten or fifteen drops of laudanum. Feed well-boiled oatmeal, rice and arrowroot, with beef tea. Us an astringent only if necessary-the following is a good one: Prepared chalk, 3 drams; aromatic confection (powder), 2 drams; powdered gum acacia, 1 dram; laudanum, 1 oz. ; oil of cassia, 6 or 8 drops; tincture of catechu, 3 drams; spirits of salvatile, 2 drams; water to make 8 oz. The powders must be rubbed very fine in a mortar, the oil of cassia with them, the tinctures to be added in the bottle. Shake the bottle well before using, give a tablespoonful every 3 hours.
