Cocker Spaniel-Retrieving | |
|
Cocker Spaniel-Retrieving-I have a cocker spaniel that I want to train to retrieve, but when he goes after ducks he will only bring them towards the shore to where the water is such a depth that he no longer has to swim, and then he wills top and eat them. If I throw a stick in the water he will only bring it out that far. How can I break him of this?
The cocker spaniel is not as a rule, a water retriever, but some of them do retrieve naturally. However, a natural retriever is not desirable, and it is best to train the dog from the very beginning, if it is not too old. It is quite common for a natural retriever to act like this, and I think it will be difficult to break him of it.
