Coonhounds are one of the most important breeds of hunting dogs in America, the coonhounds can be further broken into smaller categories, including; English, Redbone, Black and Tan, Bluetick and Plotts among others. The name coonhound is given to all hounds formed by the general cross of the Foxhound and Bloodhound, the former giving them speed and the latter nose.
For all big game hunting, covering a trap line, etc., this is the best dog; a generally large animal (not always) of 50-60 pounds, slower than the foxhound yet with much more ability to work out a cold trail and to fight when the game is at bay.
Without the Coonhound, big game and fur hunting would be much handicapped in this country, he is found in great numbers within the United States. Used on coon, deer, bear, panther, bobcat and for fox trailing throughout the country.
As a rule the Coonhound is not given to gunshyness because the breed has been hunted over rifles and shotguns for over three centuries in this country alone.
