COLORING TENT—How can I make a small army or “dog” tent a light brown color without injuring the fabric?
First, boil in strong soapsuds, or weak lye, to clean; rinse the soap out thoroughly, in clear water. For one pound of goods, dissolve 1 more or less ounces of blue vitriol by boiling in water. Dip the goods for three hours and then pass them through time water. This makes sky blue. Now pass the goods through a solution of prussiate of potash, which gives brown. Dissolve one-fourth pound of alum in 2 gallons of boiling water, and dip the cloth in this solution to “fix ‘ the color in the cloth. This should be tried first to see if it gives the desired color.
