Comparison in Killing Power-What information can you give me regarding the Smith and Wesson Model 1908 side ejecting revolver, .44 Russian caliber? Is this cartridges sufficiently powerful for the big game found in the Northwestern States? How does it compare in killing power with the .44-40, .45 Colt and the 7.65 Luger?
There is nothing whatever wrong with the revolver itself, and I think the cartridges used in it are powerful enough for anything that a revolver is likely to be used for. The .44 Russian does not have the killing power of the .44-40, as it has a lighter load of powder and consequently lower velocity is imparted to the bullet, also the shape of the .44-40 bullet is better for killing, while the .44 Russian bullet is better for penetration. It is not as powerful as the .45 Colt for the same reasons and does not kill as well, for in addition to the heavier charge of the .45 Colt. But for all of that I think you will be satisfied with the killing power within its limits.
