Coyote Hunting Decoys
Coyote even though they have been hunted throughout history, poisoned, trapped and had a bounty on their heads, are still thriving in north America, why because they are extremely wary, relying on both smell and sight to avoid danger and locate prey. While using scent free body wash and laundry detergent, while watching the wind, can help with the coyotes ability to scent you, there is more to defeating the coyotes keen eyesight than just wearing camouflage, that is why you should be using a coyote hunting decoy.
Coyote hunting decoys help to keep the coyotes attention focused off the hunter, allowing you to get into position for the shot, it also prevents them from hanging up. When a coyote comes in to the call, they are expecting a wounded animal to offer a free and easy meal, when they don’t see anything, the urgency of beating the other dogs in the area disappears and their survival instinct kicks in. By offering a coyote hunting decoy you stand a much better chance of having the coyote come straight in.
There are commercial coyote hunting decoys available that use batteries to produce motion, they are very effective and relatively inexpensive and a good investment if you are going to get serious about coyote hunting. If however you are just starting out at predator hunting you can make your own coyote hunting decoy, many hunters simply use a large feather from a gull or other large bird, by hanging it on a bush or tree limb several feet above the ground every breath of air will move the feather, drawing the coyote in. Another homemade coyote hunting decoy can simply be a stuffed animal hanging again on a string, this time the hunter used a small string to occasionally move the stuffed animal.
Using a coyote hunting decoy is a great way to draw coyote in those last 100 yards and keep there attention off of you as you prepare for the shot.
