CLOSE SHOOTING—Which is the closest shooting shotgun?
While there is a great difference in the shooting of individual guns, there is little difference in the shooting of the different makes if they are of the same measurements and are bored the same. For instance, you might take a full choked Ithaca, 12 gauge, 30-inch, and a Remington of the same specifications, and one gun may place from twenty-five to fifty shots more in side of a certain sized circle than the other; then take two other guns of the same makes and there would be an equal difference, but in favor of the other make of gun. All Winchester shotguns are guaranteed to place 290 shots inside of a 30- inch circle at forty yards, the load being 3 drams of smokeless powder and 1 1/4 ounce of No. 7 chilled shot. When ordering a new gun from the factory specify how the barrels are to be bored and how many shot they must place inside of a given circle with a certain load and any reputable maker will build you such a gun.
