CATGUT—Is catgut made from some certain part of the intestines, or not, and how is it made?
Catgut is made from the intestines of almost any large animal, but never from those of cats. They are first cleaned of their contents by scraping with a round edged knife and then thoroughly washed. Then soak the intestines in running water for a couple of days, to loosen the inner and outer membranes and the outer is then removed by scraping. The inner membrane is then soaked three or four hours in water to which wood ashes has been added, when it is washed clean and dried. It may then he split into thin fibers.
