Catfish, Pickles-Can catfish be pickled so they can be kept for future eating?
A very old and most successful hunter, trapper and fisherman once told me that fresh water catfish could be pickled by first sliming them. He explained it like this: Dip into hardwood ashes a woolen rag and strip it down over each catfish several times-and do not get the damp ashes on your fingers, either. Now wash the fish in clean water and dress without removing the skin-I do not know whether the head is to be left on or not. Remove all the blood carefully from along the backbone on the inner side of fish. Now salt heavily with coarse salt. I do not vouch for this because I have never tested its merits, but I believe it would work.
