Case Head Expansion is important for the handloader to understand as it can be a clear indication of excessive chamber pressure. When a cartridge is fired the expanding gases push out against the brass case forcing it to conform to the chamber. After firing if the pressures are to great, the cartridge is often hard to remove from the chamber, this is generally a sign of case head expansion. Handloaders who are pushing the safety envelope should measure case head expansion and back off on charge weight if it measures .0002” or greater.
