Carbine for Deer and Coyote
Carbine for Deer and Coyote-I want to get a carbine that shoots a fair sized bullet, to hunt deer and coyotes with. As I hardly ever shoot more than 200 yards, how would a .38-55 answer? Can I get a carbine of this caliber with nickel steel barrel? If so, where, and what will it cost? If you think any other caliber is better, please name it.
You can get a .38-55 caliber carbine with a nickel steel barrel from the Marlin Firearms Co. I would not advise the purchase of the .38-55 carbine if you want to use it much for coyotes, and since coyotes are in season the year around and deer but a short time, I presume you would use the rifle far more for coyotes than for deer. The ideal coyote rifle, to my notion, would be one giving high velocity to the bullet, which should have a low trajectory also. The caliber should be small. For deer the ideal rifle would be of larger bore, but also the high velocity and low trajectory as in the other. The compromise would be a medium caliber, such as the .30-30, and there is probably nothing better for deer, and no more satisfactory all-around caliber. But if you want something larger the .32 special is about the best I know of. The bullet of this cartridge has quite a high muzzle velocity, 2,111 feet per second, and the trajectory slightly lower than that of the .30-30. It is a fine caliber for deer and larger game, You can get a carbine of this caliber with nickel steel barrel, of either Marlin or Winchester make, and for prices I refer you to the retail dealers who advertise in Hunter-Trader-Trapper. You can get a .30-30 carbine in both these makes, also the Savage. You can also get the Stevens High Power rifle using the .30-30 Remington cartridge, and though not a carbine, the barrel is only 22 inches long, and the Remington has the same length barrel. You can also get both of these two rifles in .32 caliber.
