Bust up the Flock to get a shot at call shy Turkeys | |
|
Ever been turkey hunting when you know where the birds are but you just can't get them to come to your call. It happens all the time, you can see the turkeys, feeding in a clearing or a field, you quietly get yourself into position, set up your decoys and then nothing. The birds don't respond.
Next time this happens try this strange but effective technique. Bust up the flock, that’s right, run (without your gun) right through the birds, scatter them, and I do mean scatter them. You don't want them all moving off together, you want them running for their lives, in every direction.
Once you have them scattered set up and start to call, you will be surprised but more times than not they will come right into your setup. Especially if you did a good job scattering the birds.
Why does this work, simply because turkeys like to be together in a flock, they are not solitary birds. Once the birds settle down after your scare, they will immediately set about trying to gather themselves back together.
By using a long, relatively loud series of yelps, you will appear to be a turkey calling to reassemble the group. The only draw back to this technique is that it will draw in both toms and hens, and if you live in a state like Maine which only allows the taking of mature toms, you may find yourself busted by a hen..
