BUFFALOES—HOW MANY IN HERD—How large a herd of buffaloes did you ever hear of? Where did they go in winter? How many are there left? Where could I get a buffalo horn?
In the days of the buffalo these animals were found in very large herds on the Western plains, but it was impossible to count them or even estimate their number with anything near accuracy. There were many thousands of them in a herd sometimes; they moved north and south across the plains from Canada to Texas. There are no wild buffaloes in the United States today. All that are left are a few small herds in captivity, and these are mostly crossed with domestic cattle. In northern Canada a small herd of them still remain, but they are protected by the government on the plains you can still find plenty of buffalo skulls and horns, very much decayed, but the horns may be scraped and polished, as they are sound inside. I think that you can get polished buffalo horns from L. W. Stiliwell, Deadwood, S. Dak.
