BRITISH COLUMBIA TRAPPING | |
|
BRITISH COLUMBIA TRAPPING—We are going with pack horses and will trap northeast of Ft. George. How many and what sizes of traps would you advise taking?
In the section of Canada which you intend to trap in you will find marten the principal fur, with lynx coming next. You will also find a few mink, perhaps a good number, also a few otter, fisher, wolverines and plenty of weasel. The amount of traps you could tend would depend entirely on your style of trapping and the ability or inclination to look after the traps. If you keep moving them frequently and only set in places which you are certain are very good, 75 or 80 traps are all one man can tend properly. If you put out a long time to he run the en tire season without change—the custom in that part of the country—you could each tend several hundred traps. I would have two- thirds of the traps set for marten, and these would be No. 1 size of Oneida Jump or Victor brands. The remainder would be mostly 1 1/2 or 2 Newhouse for lynx, etc., and a few No. 2 1/2 Newhouse for otter.
